Well, I’m going to do exactly what I like and to hell with the rest of them.

The Crimson Petal and the White, episode 2

I had a hard time contextualizing this series, until I read a review calling it a “feminist horror story.” Then it all clicked into place. It’s not a morality play or a fairy tale or a character study, the ending doesn’t satisfy any of those categories. It’s a feminist horror story.

"The hardest thing for me was that I’m very in awe of Sugar and loved her so much as a character that I always wanted to make her stronger than she was and I felt a little bit too much into that temptation. I never wanted her to feel or be weak and that is part of the story. I was always having argument with Mark [Gatiss] and he was saying “you have to let her be vulnerable and weak ‘cause it’s part of her too.” I would have had her hitting guys with a walking stick."

"Look at the last London Film Festival. All the strong parts for women were period pieces: An Education, 1960s; Bright Star, 1820s. And the contemporary films such as Prophet and 44 Inch Chest were almost exclusively male affairs. I could complain that when women are allowed to play contemporary, it’s as a romantic plot device or your body is your only stock-in-trade – and in the past I have complained."

Somebody wonderful put up every Romola Garai outfit in Glorious 39. Go over to The Butterfly Balcony and enjoy. The best thing about the clothes? The fact that the last scene in the movie involves a jaunty beret, placed just so.
